Blake Lively's messed-up fishtail plait

Probably the most talked-about hair DO this week, Blake Lively's messed up fishtail plait brings together two key trends - the fishtail plait, which of course has been popular for well over a year, and volume - always a big catwalk trend but only the most confident celebs will try to carry it off. We LOVE Blake's interpretation so we asked one of our fave hairdressers Chris Appleton to break this complicated-looking style into a couple of easy steps. Have a go!

Set the hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Texture Tonic, saturating the root area and blast it with a hairdryer. Next, take 2-3 inch sections and back-brush each of them with a Mason and Pearson Bristle Brush, teasing bits of the hair out to give volume.

Spritz over the hair with L’Oreal Infinium Spray and run a straightener over the top to infuse the volume you have created and stop it from dropping. Put the hair up into a high ponytail and take two sections to be braided into a fishtail plait, keeping it fairly structured at the root and then gradually pull small pieces out to give the plait a dishevelled look, tying up with an elastic bobble.
